FOREWORD

In this book the visual image accompanies the word, and both in unison are to help disclose to you the elevated realms of the soul. –
At first glance, however, you will perhaps suppose, even before the word has succeeded in tuning the soul in you as a harp is tuned, that a ‘new expressive urge’, which at the moment of writing has tried its hand in all the arts, has also found expression in these pictures? –
I would be glad to confirm your opinion, if this were the case.
Yet the attempts to give formation to what is here depicted have recourse to an age when this new expressive urge was still unknown. Moreover, I must confess: – I have never felt in me that need, by which many striving in the field of the arts today feel summoned, to create for oneself new means of expression because the old ones no longer seem sufficiently pure and true for their expressive need.
I can well understand the motivation for this need and the call to clear new ways, yet what I have sought to express was already received in me together with its form so that I never experienced any other need in me than to depict the form as I received it.

The pictures shown here originated in me in the very same way as everything else that ever sought formation within me.
Yet what sought to be depicted here was in itself already fashioned differently, with the result that those forms found in the pictures had necessarily to proceed from the impulse to depict. –

Book 21 Forword

As fully awake and conscious within an inner world of the essential spirit as in the world of the physical senses, these forms are familiar to me in the same way as everything surrounding me in the earthly world.
However, whereas things touched by the light of the earthly sun for the most part remain within their well determined borders, in that spiritual world form is depicted as ever vivid change.
Whilst on earth all form emerges from one rigidly fixed point of view, in that spiritual world one beholds the forms in such a way as though one were a hollow space whose borders are a thousand eyes…
Yet here too no search took place by me for the form of depiction.
Whatever I experienced took by itself form as picture on the surface, and I only tried by using the artistic means at my disposal, to capture this picture ever more clearly, kept pure of all additions.

The titles of these pictures reflect what I want to make part of experience in this book through the word.
They may serve only as ‘indication’ in order to further that necessary ‘disposition’ for contemplation to awaken sound and rhythm within the soul.
Those rare individuals who can themselves consciously experience in this spiritual world to which the pictures bear witness, will easily rediscover their own experiences in the images.
Let it be said to the others that the world of the spirit depicted here will only be experienced when the nether region of occult images belonging to that illusion-ridden realm of permanent twilight and dark horrors, from where mediums, somnambulists and ecstatics are accustomed to fetch their supposed confirmation for visions occurring in their confused imaginations, has been left behind.

Since all the elements of the visions presented in this book are rooted in the deepest primeval ground of every single man to such an extent that similarities can be found for them there, powers can thereby be awoken by these pictures which concentrate within one another the ‘senses’ of the soul into that one original sense which is the prerequisite for every genuine experience of spiritual occurrences. –
Word and image here should help the awakening of this original sense of the soul…
The extent to which this is attainable by every individual using this book will depend alone on the level of spiritual development already attained by this individual.
Nevertheless, the correct ‘disposition’ can achieve much in this respect.

If one wants to attain the things this book can give, then let one straightaway dispense with all rational interpretations of the depicted visions!
Here profound inner submersion and sensitivity alone will allow the hieroglyphs of the formations to be transferred into a discernable movement of the soul. –
The will to feel for oneself must always be present, if experience of the soul is to follow on from contemplation of the pictures.
This is true of all art; but here this will is needed to a heightened degree if one is to reach from the outside, which reveals itself to the eye, into the inside. – –

Once the powers of contemplation have really been awoken, those who experience will, each in their own way, certainly be capable of other visions. For what has been depicted here are merely results from inwardly connected images which, when in unison with the words of this book, should bring close an inner realm of the soul that has become more estranged through the outside world than is necessary. – –

Among those already familiar with the teachings of ancient wisdom to which I have been permitted to give expression in my writings, there will be but a few unable to grasp at once the meaning of this book.
Experience has shown me, however, that even in those less familiar, particularly if they had in some sense an ‘artistic’ nature, after even just brief empathy a resounding of the soul come forth resulting in primeval intuitions…

I can and must not, if I am not to obstruct the path to the soul, give any ‘explanation’ of the world of forms and colours longing for pictorial formation in these depictions.
I must trust in the powers of the soul of every individual contemplator.
Every attempt at interpretation is here of evil; it might merely veil the essence with a cloak of thought. –

In the magical works of all ages and peoples sacred symbols were familiar to the initiated; but few know that these symbols originated from spiritual contemplation, and that they had once been found in the realms of the active spirit. –
Such symbols are shown to you here in their eternal realm of formation!
Only if you still know immersion into your primeval nature will the power of these signs reveal itself to you!
Blessed are you, if you can then interpret them from their effect upon your soul!
Then you will be able to dispense with any further ‘explanation’ of their values!
Then you will be able to bless the day which brought this book into your hands. –
I for my part will rejoice over your happiness…
